If you practice Tai Chi, you already know how it feels afterward — a little quieter in the head, a little looser in the body, like something has been untangled. What you might not know is that researchers are now finding hard evidence that this “untangling” isn’t just a feeling. It shows up on standardized tests of creative thinking.

A study published in July 2026 in the Dutch journal Acta Psychologica looked specifically at whether practicing Tai Chi changes how the brain generates and refines ideas. The findings are good news for anyone who already trains, and a compelling reason to start for anyone who hasn’t.

Researchers recruited 105 art and design students — people whose work depends heavily on creative output — and split them into two groups.

  • The Tai Chi group learned and practiced a 12-form routine adapted from the well-known 24-form Yang-style sequence, training twice a week for eight weeks.

2. Ideas became more original. This is the most striking result. The Tai Chi group didn’t just hold steady on originality — they measurably improved. The comparison group, meanwhile, actually saw originality scores decline over the same eight weeks. In other words, doing nothing wasn’t neutral; it went backward, while structured Tai Chi practice moved forward.

3. A calmer mind seems to be doing the work. The researchers describe Tai Chi as producing a “stable yet flexible cognitive state” — steady enough that you’re not scattered, loose enough that you’re not locked into one track of thought. Their theory is that the slow, continuous, mindful movement of Tai Chi reduces mental “fixation” — the tendency to get stuck on the first idea or the most obvious answer — which then frees up space for new associations to surface.

4. The benefits arrived fast. Eight weeks, twice a week, is not a large time commitment — and the effects were already measurable at that point. This lines up with a broader pattern seen across Tai Chi research generally: many physical and cognitive benefits appear within an 8-to-16-week window, not after years of practice.

Why This Makes Sense, Physiologically and Psychologically

None of this happens by magic. A few things about how Tai Chi is practiced plausibly explain the creativity boost:

  • It’s slow on purpose. Unlike most exercise, Tai Chi deliberately removes speed and urgency from the equation. This lowers the pressure that normally narrows attention onto “getting it done,” and a less pressured mind explores more freely.

  • It trains adaptability in the body first. Tai Chi’s continuous weight-shifting and postural adjustment requires constantly reorganizing your movement on the fly. It’s plausible this bodily adaptability transfers, at least partly, to mental adaptability — the same idea behind “embodied cognition.”

Give it the full eight weeks before judging results. It’s tempting to expect instant clarity after one class. The study’s effects were measured after two full months of practice — treat that as your realistic benchmark, not a single session.

Practice before creative work, not just as separate exercise. Because the effect seems tied to a temporary shift into a calmer, more flexible mental state, it may be worth experimenting with practicing Tai Chi (even a short set) directly before a task that requires brainstorming, designing, writing, or problem-solving — rather than only doing it as a stand-alone wellness activity hours away from creative work.

Any accessible style should work. The study used a simplified, beginner-friendly 12-form set derived from Yang-style — not an advanced or martial-focused form. This suggests you don’t need to be an advanced practitioner or use a combat-oriented style to get the cognitive benefit; a gentle, well-structured beginner routine appears sufficient.

Pair it with genuine mindful attention, not autopilot. Since the proposed mechanism is reduced mental fixation through calm, focused attention, going through the motions while mentally elsewhere likely blunts the effect. The “meditative” quality of the practice — following breath, noticing weight shifts, staying present in the form — seems to be doing real work, not just the exercise itself.

While the study specifically recruited art and design students, the underlying mental skills — flexible thinking, generating original ideas, escaping mental ruts — matter well beyond art:
