On March 21, 2026, the first International Taijiquan Day will be observed worldwide, following the official declaration by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on November 5, 2025, recognizing March 21 as International Taijiquan Day.
The date was chosen intentionally. March 21 marks the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, when day and night are equal in length. This balance reflects the yin–yang philosophy that is central to Taijiquan — the idea that complementary forces exist in dynamic relationship rather than opposition.
The international recognition acknowledges Taijiquan’s global impact on health, wellness, and cultural exchange. Originating in China, Taijiquan is now practiced in more than 180 countries across diverse communities and age groups.
International Taijiquan Day has several clear purposes: to foster world peace, encourage cross-cultural understanding, and promote the continued practice of Taijiquan worldwide.
It also highlights core principles embedded in the tradition, including “harmony between humanity and nature” and “overcoming strength with gentleness.”
This special day also presents a valuable outreach opportunity for Tai Chi teachers and programs.
🧰To support your efforts, we have created a practical promotion toolkit for International Taijiquan Day. The toolkit includes:
• A customizable flyer that can be personalized with your program information
• A ready-to-use class or seminar script built around the theme of the Day
Members of the American Tai Chi & Qigong Association can access the toolkit at no cost by signing into their account. Non-members may purchase it for a modest fee through our online store.
