Breath, Stabilize, Rebuild: Liuzijue (Six Healing Sounds) Qigong for Stroke Rehabilitation

Jul 28, 2026

When people think about improving balance, they usually think about stronger legs, better coordination, or practicing standing exercises. But what if one of the most important places to start is your breathing?

A fascinating new study on Liuzijue (Six Healing Sounds) Qigong offers fresh insight into this question. Researchers found that stroke patients who practiced Liuzijue in addition to standard rehabilitation experienced significantly greater improvements in lung function and activation of important core muscles than those receiving rehabilitation alone. More importantly, the study suggests these changes may help support trunk control and, ultimately, balance.

This is an exciting finding because it points to a possible “breathing-core-balance” pathway. In other words, improving the way we breathe may help improve the way we stabilize our bodies before we even take a step.

Liuzijue is a traditional form of Qigong that combines slow, gentle movements with coordinated breathing and six distinctive vocalized exhalations. While these sounds have been part of the practice for centuries, modern researchers are beginning to uncover how they may contribute to respiratory function and core muscle activation.

For Qigong teachers, this research offers practical reasons to give breathing the attention it deserves rather than treating it as merely something that accompanies the movements. For practitioners, it is a reminder that progress isn’t always immediately visible. Sometimes important improvements are happening “under the hood”—strengthening the body’s internal support system before noticeable changes in balance or movement appear.

Of course, this study does not suggest that Liuzijue is a replacement for conventional rehabilitation. Instead, it shows how Qigong may complement rehabilitation by targeting physiological systems that are often overlooked.

In our premium article, you’ll discover:

  • 🎐 What Liuzijue (Six Healing Sounds) Qigong is and why it differs from many other Qigong forms.
  • 🫁 Why breathing plays a much larger role in balance than most people realize.
  • 🔬 How the researchers uncovered a possible “breathing → core → balance” pathway.
  • 👨‍🏫 Practical lessons Qigong teachers can apply immediately in their own classes.
  • 🌿 Why this research may have implications not only for stroke rehabilitation but also for healthy aging.

Whether you teach Qigong, practice it yourself, or simply want to understand how traditional mind-body exercises are being explained by modern science, this study provides an intriguing new perspective. It may change the way you think about one of the most fundamental things we do every day: breathe.
