Healthy Aging Month: What the New Tai Chi Evidence Map Shows

Jul 28, 2026 #Older People

September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to think beyond simply living longer and focus on living better.

Healthy aging means maintaining the physical, mental, and emotional abilities that help us stay active, independent, and engaged in life.

A recent study* published in Frontiers in Public Health created an evidence map by reviewing 118 systematic reviews on Tai Chi for older adults.

The result is one of the most comprehensive overviews of Tai Chi research to date.

Across this large body of evidence, the strongest support was found for Tai Chi’s ability to improve balance, reduce fall risk, support cognitive function, enhance mood, improve sleep, and increase quality of life.

Together, these benefits paint a compelling picture: Tai Chi is not simply an exercise for one part of the body—it is a whole-person practice that supports many of the abilities we rely on to age well.

The study also highlights an important point for both teachers and students. Healthy aging isn’t built through occasional bursts of activity. Most successful research programs involved regular, moderate practice over time, reminding us that consistency matters far more than intensity.

Helping You Celebrate the Healthy Aging Month

To help Tai Chi instructors, community organizations, and practitioners share these evidence-based messages during September, we’ve created a collection of Healthy Aging Month resources, including:

Whether you’re introducing Tai Chi to newcomers or promoting your own classes, these resources can help you communicate the benefits of Tai Chi with confidence while staying grounded in the latest research.

Let’s work together this Healthy Aging Month to help more people discover how Tai Chi can support healthier, more active, and more independent lives.
